General Studies

Subject Categories: Humanities & Liberal Arts

Degree: Associate of Arts (A.A.)

Total Credit Hours: A minimum of 62 credit hours

Institution: Harford Community College

Program Description:

The General Studies program permits students to explore various disciplines while developing an academic focus. It allows them to tailor students to meet the requirements of transfer institutions and provides them an opportunity to develop an occupational concentration. Three components comprise the curriculum.

Core requirements provide breadth of study, including courses in written and oral communication, mathematics, science, history, humanities, and health and physical education.

Next, the requirement for a 12-credit concentration in a discipline assures a focus for exploratory students, while maintaining flexibility for transfer students. It also allows other students to develop the skills and abilities necessary for employment in fields in which the College does not have specified programs.

Finally, 15-17 credits of general electives provide the opportunity to develop an individualized program of study. For example, students my use these electives to develop majors in architecture, health sciences, physical education, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and pre-professional studies.

Delivery format: Online (via the World Wide Web)
